Every day is Women’s Day at Gorima’s.
Women are the spice of life! At Gorima’s this rings particularly true. Our story begins in 1979 when our first spice was created, Magi Masala. It was blended by none other than the acclaimed cookbook editor of Indian Delights, Zuleikha Mayat. There was virtually no availability of ready-mixed spice until Magi Masala arrived on the scene, and today almost 40 years later, it is one of our most popular items.
The secret recipe was passed on to Mrs. Khatija Mall who went on to create a wider range of products with equal yum-factor. The small business started formal production in 1981 and began supplying some of the local retailers in Durban. In 1986, the first Gorima’s store opened in its current location at The Workshop. Today there are 13 Gorima’s stores with the 14th opening on 28 September 2017 at the new Cornubia Shopping Mall.
Supporting Women-owned Business
Starting out as a home industry, Khatija wanted to help develop other women’s home-based businesses. In 2002, a lady whom Mrs Mall was giving a lift, told her that she makes roti and puri patha. Today, the same woman supplies these items for all our stores.
In 1988, a lady came into The Workshop store with a dozen veda to sell, almost 30 years later she also provides the delicious samoosas, polis and daal rotis that you have probably enjoyed. She has recently handed the reins to her daughter who now runs the growing business.
Gorima’s was built on the strength of its women and today the group boasts 85% female employment with our store staff comprising 97% women. All of our home-industry suppliers are women-owned and we continue to invest in them to ensure you get the finest products. We strive to make life easy for our ladies every day with products that provide quality, convenience, value and really great food.
