18 June marks International Sushi Day! Sushi (すし, 寿司, 鮨) is the Japanese preparation and serving of specially prepared vinegared rice (鮨飯 sushi-meshi) combined with various ingredients (ネタ neta), most commonly seafood (primarily served raw), vegetables, nori (海苔 seaweed) and occasionally tropical fruits.
Its tasty roots date back 2000 years to the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia. The art developed in Japan and sushi as we know it came into being in the 8th century CE. This delicious delicacy is now enjoyed all around the world today.
There’s no denying it, sushi is super yummy. It’s also pretty healthy providing us with bite-sized combos of protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. In South Africa, it has become highly popular despite the escalating cost of the attractive cuisine.
